REL 463 Contemporary Trends in Theology I (3cr)
The course presents the foundation of modern theology. It explores issues in contemporary theology, including methods for asking theological questions about God, revelation, scripture, the church, and faith itself.
PT1 735 Preaching as Social Transformation (3cr)
Designed to build upon previous experience gained in sermon preparation and delivery, and therefore points toward the presentation of the student's senior sermon. The student prepares and leads a complete worship service, demonstrating the benefits gained from exposure to various academic disciplines. Sermon delivery and worship leadership are subject to final faculty review and evaluation.
REL 311 Old Testament Literature I (3cr)
An in-depth survey of the First Five Books of Moses, a.k.a. Torah, Joshua, Judges, I and II Samuel, focusing on early Israelite history, the conquest of Canaan, and the early settlement of the land.
REL 312 New Testament Literature I (3cr)
An in-depth survey of the Synoptic Gospels, The Gospel of John, and the Book of Acts.
REL 417 Theological Communication (3cr)
Examining the unique phenomenon of preaching in the black church/black religion context, reviewing the topics of dialectical discourse and the hermeneutics of suspicion.
PT 533 Intro to Preaching and Worship (3 cr)
This course is an entry-level homiletics course designed to introduce students to a methodology for developing sermons. The class will concentrate on textual preaching and harvesting good news for placement in every sermon. Lastly, PT 533 exposes students to a critique model
that works for all forms/styles of preaching.
