EDU 220 Foundations of Education (3cr)
This course presents a broad view of the origin, nature, and scope of American Education. Emphasis is placed on trends in history and philosophy that have helped shape the aims, curriculum, organization, administration, and supervision of the American Education System. The impact of ancient philosophies is thoroughly investigated. Developing a Philosophy of Education consistent with democratic ideals is one of this course's objectives. Ten (10) hrs. of practicum required.
IDS 255 Orientation to Educational Environments—Pre-school Programming (1 credit)
This course provides an overview of terminology, programs, and concepts used in preschool settings. Topics for discussion include rules and regulations, grading and assessment, discipline procedures, the roles and functions of school personnel, the Standards of Learning, specialized school programs, and special school populations. It is designed for individuals who wish to work in a school environment, either voluntarily or paid.
IDS 260- 261FB Survey of Community-Based Education in After-School Programming (3cr)
This course exposes students to the concept of the Community Educator as reflective strategist. Students are exposed to educational programming in community-based agencies and auxiliary schools, where support programs are needed to provide academic enrichment. Instruction focuses on the use of learning and developmental strategies for educational programming.
EDU 321 Curriculum and Instructional Strategies for Diverse Learners (3cr)
This course examines the foundation of learning processes for diverse learners (including: multi-cultural, developmentally disabled, exceptional learners, the gifted/talented, and ESL). Candidates explore instructional methods and strategies for implementing curriculum related to the Virginia Standards of Learning. Multiple resources and technologies are utilized as instructional tools. Ten (10) hrs. of practicum required
EDU 340 Computers and Technology in Education (3 cr)
This course examines a variety of instructional media, including Laser Disc, Digital Imagery, Computer-Assisted Instruction, and personal productivity tools. Emphasis is placed on systematically enhancing the teaching-learning process through multimedia instruction and practical computer use. The Virginia Computer Standard for Instructional Personnel is the basis for this course.
EDU 358 Classroom/ Behavior Management (3 cr)
This course focuses on the study of principles, practical applications, and behavior management related to planning and classroom organization for students with regular education needs, including those who are gifted or talented. Basic research design, positive practices, group contingencies, and non-aversive punishment techniques are emphasized.
